ProtoCAM Throwback: What We’ve Been Up To This Year

July 12, 2018

Success

It’s about halfway through the year, and we’re taking a moment to “throwback” and reflect on what we’ve accomplished so far!

In February, we teamed up with East Penn Lower Macungie Middle School to take home several wins in Dream It. Do It. PA’s 2018 student video contest, “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” Local manufacturers worked together with 30 middle school teams from Lehigh, Northampton, and Carbon counties to create videos demonstrating how manufacturing can be fun and interesting. Upon completion, the videos were then put to a public vote and judged on a number of categories. At the Lehigh Valley awards event held at ArtsQuest Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, PA, ProtoCAM and East Penn Lower Macungie were thrilled to win an award for Outstanding Editing, and also placed 3rd in most overall public votes.

We also loved participating in the “Engineer Your World” event during Engineering Career Days at Da Vinci Science Center in February. The event celebrated National Engineers Week, which is a week to celebrate engineering and ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. We presented a lab where students built their own catapults out of popsicle sticks and rubber bands and attempted to launch them as far as possible. Participants were awarded with 3D-printed catapults printed right in our facility!

The catapults were so fun to build that we actually made a case study out of the project. We love doing case studies, and have already put out several this year, including one on the Snap Shot Flask and another exploring our redesign of Langhorne Carpet Company’s Jacquard cylinder. In fact, we enjoyed delving into the Langhorne project so thoroughly that we entered it into the “advanced concepts” category of the Technical Competition at the 2018 Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) Conference–and we won! Keep on the look out for new case studies coming soon, including one featuring a revolutionary new product–the CutnGo, which is currently in its fundraising stage on Indiegogo.

Our annual picnic at Coca-Cola park to watch the Lehigh Valley IronPigs was in June. The game featured the IronPigs vs the Toledo Mud Hens, and Jarett Graham, son of Ed Graham, our Vice President of Additive Manufacturing, threw out a first pitch. Tons of fun was had with mascots FeRROUS and FeFe on hand, lots of pictures, loads of great food, and the whole ProtoCAM team!

We were visited by some Lehigh University students back in April, who toured our facility as inspiration for their final 3D-printed projects–shoes! Ed Graham and our Marketing Coordinator, Dale Bond, attended their final critique and gave suggestions, advice, and praise to the finished projects.

We’ve published several blogs so far this year covering everything from going green in the industry to how generative design can be used alongside 3D printing. Stayed tuned, as we’ll be putting out more interesting and up-to-date content about what’s happening in the industry, some of which will be covered by our marketing intern!

Speaking of interns, we have two of them for the summer! Ashley and Nolan joined us in June and will be with us through the end of August. Ashley is our marketing intern, and is working closely with Dale Bond, while Nolan is functioning as our additive manufacturing intern and is supervised by Ed Graham. We’ve loved seeing them grow so far as they learn all about the industry, and we can’t wait to see how far they go!

We’ve attended TONs of tradeshows, and still have a bunch to go. Some of the highlights include the NSSF SHOT Show in Las Vegas, the Southeast Design-2-Part Show in Atlanta, and PACK EXPO East in nearby Philadelphia. We’re still looking forward to the Manufacturers Association for Plastics Processors (MAPP) Benchmarking and Best Practices Conference and the Investment Casting Institute (ICI) Technical Conference and Expo, both in October, and we hope to see you there!

There’s always something happening at ProtoCAM, and we loved to share what we’re doing with our valued customers! Be sure to check out our learning center to always see the latest happenings around our facility. A couple upcoming events you can already look forward to are our A Tour @ ProtoCAM, Presented by East Penn and Western Lehigh Chambers of Commerce coming up in September and our Manufacturing Day event in October, both of which will feature a tour of our facility, with our additive manufacturing experts on hand to answer any and all questions. We’re looking forward to continuing to participate in new and awesome events this year, and we can’t wait to share it all with you!
