Prototype injection molding is a specialty service,
combining rapid prototyping techniques with more traditional
plastic injection molding processes. ProtoCAM uses rapid tooling
in conjunction with plastic injection molding to quickly create
small quantities (below 50,000) any thermoplastic part. This
fast prototyping injection molding service creates injection-molded
plastic parts for a variety of uses.
The Prototype Injection
Molding Process
The first step is to create the tooling using CNC machining
or EDM machining. This is done in a fraction of the time required
to create hard production tooling. The result is typically
an aluminum mold. From the aluminum mold, thermoplastic material,
customer supplied or customer specified, is used to create
the pieces needed. The entire process takes much less time
than the traditional hard tooling with high volume injection
molding process.
Materials
For the prototype injection molding process, any thermoplastic
materials, including fiberglass-filled materials, can be
used. In some cases there are specialty materials that
the customer
requires that can only be met with our injection molding
process. ProtoCAM's specialists in plastic injection
molding and prototype engineering can assist with common
or special
needs.
